Understanding SCAA Coffee Grades to Improve Your Coffee Experience
Only the greatest coffee beans, carefully selected and graded to guarantee quality and flavour, are what we at Sun Coffee think we offer. Knowing the grading system while choosing your coffee will improve the experience. Based on quality and flavour attributes, the Speciality Coffee Association of America (SCAA) maintains a rating system. The grades signify the following:
< 40 = Not in Grade
Coffee beans of low quality and significant flaws. Usually, these are not offered for sale as food.
40–50 = Not in the Grade
Beans that are deficient in several areas and don’t meet fundamental requirements, giving them uneven flavours.
50–60 = Grade Commercial
Common coffee beans that are used in mass-market or bulk purchases. Frequently found in big coffee chains or for instant coffee.
60–70 = Equivalent Grade
Used mostly in high-volume coffee trades, but marginally superior to commercial grade. Often, these beans are roasted dark to cover up flaws.
70–74 = Moderate Calibre
Good coffee, but not as complex in flavour as speciality coffee connoisseurs would like. frequently seen in store brands.
Usual Good Quality (UGQ) is 75–79.
A better cup of coffee, with less flaws and a more harmonious flavour profile. Although they are of higher grade, these beans are not yet classified as speciality.
80–84 = High-end
These beans are well-rounded, have good flavour clarity, and minimal flaws, making them an excellent entry into the speciality coffee market. An excellent option for regular coffee.
85–89 = Speciality
Superior beans with nuanced flavours, cultivated in areas renowned for producing exceptional coffee. To enhance their best qualities, these beans have undergone careful processing.
90–94 = Speciality Premium
Outstanding beans with outstanding flavour, aroma, and balance. These are uncommon and frequently originate from small production micro-lots.
Super Premium Speciality = 95–100
The ultimate standard for coffee quality. These are the best beans available, with unmatched complexity, sweetness, and scent that provide a once-in-a-lifetime tasting experience.
In order to guarantee that every cup you brew is of the highest calibre, we at Sun Coffee take great satisfaction in procuring from the Premium and Speciality categories and above. We offer the ideal roast to suit your taste, regardless of your level of experience with coffee.
